Bad day for a truck driver indeed, this Veyron has been in the country for all of 3 weeks and was shown at Katie's Cars & Coffee (Great Falls, Va) the weekend it after it arrived at Dulles from Saudi Arabia. Looks like it made it's way up to NYC for a proper "hey look at me" symbol. Sadly though, a NYC truck driver got to it. I really want to know what his insurance company is saying right about now.
The guy pictured in the car is the owner's vehicle handler, very nice guy who seemed down to earth despite being trusted with a $2.1 million dollar customized Veyron Grand Sport.
Here she is as of 2 weeks ago at the KC&C event.

Holy crap. I know a guy who saw that exact car when he was down in NYC.

Correction: That's a Grand Sport, not a Super Sport.

Ouch. Luckily the damage doesn't seems to be too bad (assuming there isn't more on the other side).

That's what you get for parking next to a fire hydrant. :)

So, here are some questions -
Let's say you're driving around in a car that costs 2.1 million dollars, aka 85x the value of a fairly typical car on the road. Do the actuarial tables that the insurance companies use to figure out what your insurance ought to cost take into account the random outlier like this? If you're unlucky enough to hit the guy driving around in a car that costs more than the average American makes in their entire life, is it really fair for an insurance company to drop you? jack your rates by way more than a "normal" crash?
Is it reasonable to expect someone rolling around in a 2.1 million dollar car to assume more of the risk of a crash? I'm not trying to be a class warrior or anything, but if you're driving a car that expensive, can you reasonably expect an average citizen to be able to afford to fix it if they run into you?

I'll have to ask that question to my agent next time I talk to them. The fender bender here would be a sub $2000 repair on a normal mid range modern car, but since this is a Veyron we're probably looking at something closer to $100,000. Factor in the fact it will most likely be shipped back to Bugatti for repair and top-speed re-certification. That assumes too that it's just a fender and not a new rim ($11,000+), tire ($9,500+) or anything structural or mechanical.
When that is all said and done, I can see the insurance company wanting to wash their hands of these clients, ethical or not.
I would almost bet that the Bug's owner's insurance will end up covering the repair to this. As far as the truck driver and the company he works for... I really don't know. Another factor is the handler that was driving the vehicle, and how that will play out in the insurance battle that is sure to come.
